About La Moneda

This may be the most important building in Santiago and is the seat of the Government. The palace is exquisite with its magnificent floors catching the attention of the visitor's eye. This site was bombed in the Military coup of 1973, led by Augusto Pinochet, to overthrow Salvador Allende. The architectural style of the palace being neoclassical represents the fusion of the ancient and the modern era. The palace is horizontal in shape and rectangular in composition and fortifies the stability of the building listing it on the UNESCO world heritage site. The main facade of the palace facing the Mondeo streets has its rooms segregated longitudinally and horizontally and is officially the residence of the President. The palace is ornate with its interiors being spectacular encompassing the exquisite chandeliers. The palace has a blue room in which the President receives his visitors. There is a nice statue of Allende on the grounds as also many honouring the other former Presidents of Chile. The palace is surrounded by the energizing fountain which seduces the visitors with its charm.

The 'changing of the guard' that takes place on the plaza in front of the Palace. is spectacular but the real key is the band. The 60 people strong band marches in to deliver a concert based on four to five complete songs. This happens to be one of the most moving displays of Chilean culture. This starts at 10:00 a.m. on:

Even Days in January, April, May, August, November, and December.
Odd Days In February, March, June, July, September, and October. A must-do here for a keepsake is to have a group photo with the massive Chilean flag serving as a backdrop.
