Known as a place of prayer and healing, for over 350 years people of all ages have been gathering at this shrine dedicated to Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. Its grandeur is astounding as the beauty of numerous artistic masterpieces like paintings, mosaics, stained-glass windows, and sculptures shine throughout the shrine. The shrine is so popular, that the site has been enlarged several times to accommodate not only the tourists but also the locals who often visit this place of serenity and worship. The present-day basilica was built on the site of the previous buildings, adding to Quebec City’s historical importance.
Apart from the magnificent shrine that is enough to get taken aback by, there are a number of other architectural marvels like the Scala Santa which is the staircase that Jesus ascended to Pilate’s praetorium, the Memorial Chapel which is a souvenir of the third church which welcomed pilgrims from 1676 to 1876, Way of the Cross, and Saint Anne's fountain.
