About Old Quebec

Old Québec, or “the Old City”, located in (and not to be confused with) the province of the same name, is the oldest part of Quebec City built behind the ramparts.

The city’s fortifications date back to the 17th century and are the only remaining fortifications north of Mexico City. Take a guided tour to learn all the old secrets of the city, or take the Kent Gate and explore the 2.7-mile ramparts on your own. You’ll be able to get a view of some of the finest things Old Québec has to offer.

In Upper Town you’ll find the Château Frontenac hotel, the most photographed hotel in the world that has become the capital city’s emblem. Don’t be fooled by the name. Although “château” is the French word for castle, it is really modeled after the château-style hotels in Europe. Stage your own imaginary battle at the Plains of Abraham where the French and English armies fought to keep their hold on the city, or visit the Citadelle de Québec, the largest British-built fortress in North America.

For a step further back in time visit the Quartier Petit Champlain with a little stone church built in 1688, or have a pint at the Bistrot le Pape Georges, a pub established in a stone building built in 1668.

Pamper yourself with a day at Le Monastère des Augustines, a health and wellness spa, built in a wing of the old Hôtel-Dieu de Québec monastery. The building has a reputation for healing, since it was the first hospital in North America (outside of Mexico).

A trip to Old Quebec will give you “Instagram-able” moments sure to fill your friends and family with envy.
