About Mound of Glory

The Mound of Glory is a National memorial complex established in the year 1969 for honoring Soviet soldiers. The monument pays homage to Soviet insolvency of a German pocket during 1944’s operation Bagration. The Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic chose to establish a memorial on August 18th, 1966 in the memory of soldiers who fought in World War II with the liberation of Belarus. Initially, the construction began in the year 1967, November 20, with thousands of military personnel and residents of Minsk and Minsk Oblast with builders taking part in the creation. The inauguration took place on the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus.

The Mound of Glory is located in the Smolevichi Region with a 25 kilometers point of the Minsk Moscow highway. This 230-feet Mound is designed and sculpted by O. Stakhovich and A. Bembel, respectively. The formation of the Mound of Glory has its own significance. It is formed by scorched soil from “hero cities,” an honorary title given to the towns and cities that showed high courage during the German occupation period.

The viewing center on Mound of Glory can be outreached by taking two fleets of stairs at 241 steps. After getting there, one can see various types of troops, representing four fronts which liberated Belarus in summer 1944, a stone ring with images of the guerrillas, and four obelisks in the form of bayonets. Coming down from the slope, there is a memorial plate with an engraving. Though the memorial is a solemn structure that reminds us of thousands of war martyrs, its scenic view and height have made it more of a tourist destination and popular picture clicking spot.
