The Vienna City Hall is popularly known as the Wiener Rathaus to the locals. It was designed and constructed by architect Friedrich von Schmidt. It was built in a typical Gothic style, with a tower similar to cathedrals. This building is currently the head office of Vienna's municipal administration. More than 2,000 people work in the building. It also houses the Tower of the City Hall. You can take the 331 steps to the top. Emperor Francis Joseph conditionally made a rule that the City Hall Tower was not to be higher than the 99-meter spires of the Votivkirche. Friedrich Schmidt had to think of a way to build higher still. The Tower itself is "only" 97.9 meters high. It is the Rathausmann placed on its top which makes it a total of 104.3 meters. The Rathausmann that is placed on top of the tower is a symbol of Vienna.
