The Wiener Riesenrad is a 212-ft tall Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district of Vienna. It is one of Vienna's most popular tourist attractions. Constructed in 1897, it was the world's tallest extant Ferris wheel from 1920 until 1985.
It acquired global fame by being featured in several movies like The Third Man with Orson Welles. This park offers something for everyone. There is a dinosaur park for the kids. There is the Prater Ziehrer Monument, the Prater Museum, a planetarium, and the Liliputbahn miniature steam railroad traversing a 4 km line near the main avenue. The park has space for horseback riding, swimming in the stadium pool, football, cycling, tennis, and bowls. There is Danube Park (Donaupark) in the vicinity.
The Weiner Prater is one of the largest parks in Leopoldstadt, Vienna. Along with the main alley and the Ernst Happel Stadium, this park boasts of its key attraction, the Wurstelprater - the oldest amusement park in the world. Here lies the Weiner Riesenrad Ferris Wheel, a giant wheel that towers over most pictures of the Viennese skyline. There are more than 250 attractions and rides in the amusement park itself, and you can also enjoy the day seeing the Madame Tussauds exhibit, the Chocolate Museum and dance to your heart's content at the Prater Dome- a giant disco party! Enjoy spending the day in the nostalgic charm of amusement parks before computerized mechanics took over the industry.
