Centro Cultural Bastion del Carmen is a cultural centre in Colonia del Sacramento, a city in southwestern Uruguay. The city is one of the oldest ones in the country and it is famous in the world as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cultural centre, Centro Cultural Bastion del Carmen is located on the banks of the River Plate. The site was built in the year 1880 and served in the purpose of defence. After the battle, the purpose changed and it became a place for storing grain, washing wool, tannery, and soap factory. With the passage of time, the Ministry of Education and Culture acquired the place and turned it into a Cultural Centre. The centre is open to visitors who like to visit the place to admire the beautiful view of River Plate and appreciate free exhibitions on art and culture.
Centro Cultural Bastion del Carmen is the only theatre in the region. It can be identified from afar by its huge chimney that stands out tall. Apart from the theatre, it also houses a model of the Colonia del Sacramento’s historic centre. Moreover, the cultural centre promotes several art events throughout the year. Tourists can enjoy the vibe of the place while relaxing with other visitors on the bank of the river. Afternoons are the recommended time to visit the place as visitors can experience a spectacular view of a sunset. The garden is also a beautiful place to spend some relaxing time with loved ones. In 2017, the centre was renovated.
