A ribat is a small fortification built during the Muslim conquest of North Africa. The Ribat of Monastir is the oldest such defense structure in Tunisia.
It was founded in 796 by the Governor, Harthama ibn A’yan and it was expanded in 966. Visitors may explore the buildings and inner courtyards, mosques, and ramparts. Be sure to take the stairs to the watchtowers. They are where messages were sent to other nearby ribats at night, and provide exceptional views of the city and the beach below. Though originally a quadrilateral building, over the centuries the many additions have made for a maze of passages and stairways. The ribat’s prayer rooms and mosques now house a collection of photographs, currency, and pottery from Monastir and worship of the medieval industrial materials.
You may even feel like you’ve seen the Ribat of Monastir before. It’s been the scene of the movies Jesus of Nazareth and Monty Python’s Life of Brian.
