Although structures of Bulla Regia remain somewhat above the ground, a true visit must include the houses below. Tunisia is a hot country, so this Roman town was built away from the heat and the sun.
This former Roman town is unique in Tunisia. It is famous for its underground villas with columns, courtyards, and indoor latrines. In the Quartier des, Maisons you can walk down into each house to wander the halls, dining rooms, and even bedrooms. Visitors can see the original mosaics in their original places, including the portrait of Venus and two centaurs which is the main attraction.
Above ground, tour the amphitheater, the Temple of Apollo, the Temple of Isis, the market, and the Byzantine churches. To remain cool in the summer heat there were also massive baths with water fed from the nearby springs.
