The El Ghriba Synagogue in Djerba is nothing short of stunning. It is the center of Tunisia’s Jewish life and is the oldest synagogue in the country. Built-in the 19th century the exterior is quite modest, but the interior is extravagant in rich blues and white.
Also known as the Djerba Synagogue, it is said that part of Solomon’s Temple was used in its construction. It is considered a very holy place and is the site of an annual pilgrimage and of festivities in honour of two rabbis. The body of a girl was found under the holy arch, adding to the spiritual nature of the synagogue.
The central courtyard is the perfect place for celebrations amidst the halls and columns. In the hall, there were originally twelve windows representing the tribes of Israel. The building remains unfinished, because according to tradition, “nothing, except for the divinity, is perfect.”
