Can’t get your fill of museums in Tunisia? Be sure to visit the El Djem Archaeological Museum.
It is best known for the House of Africa, a recent excavation of a Roman villa built in 170 AD. The mosaics depict the Goddess Africa and the province of Africa. They are the only known representations of the African continent from that time.
The museum is built in the style, and on the grounds, of a former Roman villa. The galleries contain sculptures and ceramics. Mosaic walkways and Roman art are centered around a central courtyard. The almost intoxicating Roman mosaics depict scenes from the colosseum and Roman Gods, all excavated from the region.
