Dougga was a small Roman town of roughly 160 acres in northern Tunisia. Unlike Carthage and other larger archaeological sites, Dougga is a quieter getaway for modern visitors.
This off-the-beaten-track site is better preserved than others, with monuments from the Numidian-Berber, Libyco-Punic, Byzantine, and Roman eras. The town showcases a necropolis, temples of Saturn and Juno Caelestis, the capitol, theatre, sanctuary, steles, and a mausoleum. Dougga, previously known as Thugga, declined during the Islamic period. The town was built on the hillside and was probably one of the first capitals of the Numidian Kingdom.
