About Gothenburg Botanical Garden

One of Europe's largest botanical gardens, this place draws over half a million visitors each year. What makes it so ideal for people to come to see it is the large grounds with a wide variety of flora and fauna. The main garden is built over 40 hectares and is home to over 16000 species. It contains an Arboretum, a Rock Garden, a Rhododendron Valley, a Japanese Glade, and a few Greenhouses. The garden is famous also for its collection of over 1500 orchids for you to marvel over, as well as its rare Eastern Island Tree. The Rork Garden also has a rather large waterfall. The place is particularly recommended if you are looking for some peace and quiet, and want to spend some time looking at nature and allowing yourself to stop and smell the flowers in bloom. The top of the garden also has the Haberget looking point which offers great views of the harbor and the old fortress of the city. You can also stop at the Garden shop for some seeds to take back home to create your own Eden.

Tips

  • Download the Botaniska app and go on a guided tour throughout the Botanical Garden. Choose between a walk that takes you through all the essential parts of the garden or go off the beaten path and head out among ferns, moss and viewpoints. This way you can explore the area easily.
  • Don't play ball or frisbee, as you might harm the flora.
  • Dont't start a fire (including one-time or camping barbecues). This can harm the plants being preserved here.
  • Don't climb trees. They are usually rare varieties and meant to be preserved.
  • Don't pick plants or any plant material from the garden, like seeds, branches, cones, sprouts, etc. It is illegal to remove anything from the Botanical Gardens and counter-productive to their conservation methods.
  • Don't leave your children unattended, since the garden is huge and they might get lost.
  • Don't litter as it is illegal and you shall be severely fined for it.
  • No bicycling or driving is allowed in the garden, since it can harm the plants. For reasons of safety only transportation of goods are allowed into the garden.
  • Dogs are not allowed into the garden from 1st May to 30th September. This is because Botaniska, apart from other gardens and parks, has very extensive, fragile and unique plant material. However, from 1st October to 28th February, when the most vulnerable plants are resting, dogs are welcome into the garden.
