Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias translates literally as the city of arts and sciences. This entertainment, culture, science and architectural center, certainly seems to be a city unto itself. Located in Valencia, it is one of the largest installations of its kind. and is considered to be one of the 12 treasures of Spain. Here you'll find hands-on science exhibits, an aquarium, art installations, an IMAX theatre, a planetarium, an opera house and so much more.
The incredible architecture of the buildings expresses what is to be found inside. For example, the dome-shaped Hemispheric, which resembles a giant eye, houses an IMAX theatre, a planetarium, and a laserium. This was the first building to open here in 1998, while construction on the other buildings continued. El Museu de Les Ciencias Principe Felipe, whose architecture resembles a big whale skeleton, opened next. This futuristic-looking building holds an enormous science museum with hands-on exhibits. The site now includes L' Umbracle, an open-air walkway lined with sculptures and plants, and L'Oceanographic, built in the shape of a water lily, which houses the largest oceanic aquarium in Europe. The most recent building to open was El Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofia — the Sofia opera house. Whether your interest is science, the performing arts, or culture, the Ciudad de las Artes is sure to deliver.
