About Mount Teide, Tenerife

Off the coast of Spain, in the Canary Islands, is Mount Teide, an active volcano. The volcano is the highest point in Spain at some 12,000 feet (3700 meters) and is the focal point of Teide national park. Teide national park was named as a UNESCO site in 2007. With about 3 million visitors annually, it is Europe's most visited national park. Most are drawn to the top of Mount Teide for the views, or to visit the astronomical observatory. To get to the top, it takes an 8-minute ride on the cable car to the upper station, and hike another 40 minutes to the volcano crater from there.

If you are feeling fit and adventurous, you can make the 5-hour trek on foot. You'll need to plan ahead though, to visit the crater. Access is free but limited. You must apply for a permit from the national park office several months in advance. Whether you simply go as high as the cable car or go all the way to the crater, you'll be treated to some of the most awe-inspiring natural views of the Canary Islands and Teide National Park itself. Here you'll be among unique geological structures, rare flora, and fauna found nowhere else on earth.
