The Aqueduct of Segovia is the city's most important architectural landmark, and certainly one of its oldest. Construction was ordered by Emperor Domitian and was built in 1st century A.D. This monumental structure was built to bring water from the Rio Frio river to Segovia, a distance of about 15 km. The aqueduct is 28.5 meters high at its highest point, not including 6 meters of the foundation below the ground.
The aqueduct is not only monumental in its scale, but also its longevity. It functioned for centuries, supplying water to Segovia until the mid 19th century. However, time, weather and pollution have taken its toll. In 2006, the aqueduct was put on the World Monuments watch list, and a management plan is underway to protect this historic architectural structure from further damage and erosion.
