Salamanca is sometimes called the Golden City due to its sandstone buildings like those found in Plaza Mayor. Built from 1729-1755, Plaza Mayor was not always the public square as it was used as a bull-fighting ring up until 1992. The bull-ring-turned public square is now considered by many to be one of Spain's most beautiful plazas. Locals come here to relax and socialize.
Visitors come to enjoy the many restaurants and tourist shops that line the square. Salamanca is a university city, and as such, the square comes alive at night. The square is illuminated and the square's bars and clubs create an entertainment vibe. Whether you're a local, a student, or a visitor, Salamanca's Plaza Mayor is a natural and beautiful meeting place. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
