Whether you choose to go to see the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao for the architecture of the building or the exhibits inside, this museum is not to be missed. The museum was designed by Canadian/American architect Frank Gehry and inaugurated in 1997 by King Juan Carlos I.
In 2010, the World Architecture Survey named the building the most important architectural work since 1980. The design is indeed bold and striking, with the seemingly randomly curved exterior of glass, titanium and limestone. It was designed to capture the light. The museum houses permanent and visiting collections of modern and contemporary art, and includes works by artists including Anselm Kiefer, Mark Rothko, Jorge Oteiza, Yves Klein and Andy Warhol.
