The Vaal River, also known as ‘Hai!arib’ in the local language, is a beautiful and spectacular site in Johannesburg, South Africa. The name ‘Vaal’ was given by the Dutch, which means dull. They gave the river this name because of the brownish colour of the surroundings. However, during the naming, the Dutch were yet to discover the many incredible things that can be done at the river because it is no longer a dull place. The river has three sections, which are the Lower Vaal, Middle Vaal and Upper Vaal. The Upper Vaal is the most popular one with tourists because it is filled with the majority of fun spots along the river. On this section, there are a lot of activities that tourists can engage in such as fishing, canoeing, kite surfing, power boats and more. There are other additional extreme water activities that are ideal for those who love the adrenaline rush. The Middle Vaal is not a popular tourist destination since it is majorly used for agriculture. One unique aspect about the Vaal River is that it is an all year round destination. However, it offers a better view from the months of November to January because of the white water rapids. This water region is surrounded by small towns that offer food, accommodation and more. There are festivals that you will also find in this region organized by the locals and visitors are urged to take part in them for an even better stay. These towns also offer farmer's market and arts and crafts items that one can buy as a souvenir to remind them of this incredible place. With its remote location and breathtaking view, the Vaal River is quite the destination.
