Birth of the new world, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, also known as “the Statue of Columbus.”The birth of the new world is a 360 foot (110m) bronze sculpture located on the Atlantic coastline of Arecibo. This place is still under construction. The only problem is that you cannot get close to it since the entire property surrounding it is fenced off. It became the tallest sculpture in North America and Puerto Rico’s highest structure and stands astride a green rise overlooking an alluring expanse of beaches and mangroves: a wild area that may one day become the terra vista park, a future adventure complex in which the statue will take center stage. The progress was stopepd for a while in September 2017 because of hurricane Maria.
You can climb up to a viewpoint palce and take in the surroundings about halfway up and visualise the milling crowd at the foot of this herculean mass of metal. It is quite ironical when it comes to the need for the statue as against the irony surrounding the structure itself. First that it should be raised within sight of an important ceremonial site for the Taino, whose culture was decimated following the explorer’s arrival on these shores; and second, that it should be raised at all with construction costs of millions of dollars on a heavily debt-saddled island. Many are also concerned about the statue’s environmental impact in an ecologically sensitive area. This statue was originally designed by Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli as a monument to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage Birth Of The New World was constructed in 1991. The statue prominently depicts Columbus controlling an anachronistic depiction of a steering wheel, with a backdrop featuring the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria traversing the Atlantic ocean. Made of 2750 bronze and steel pieces and weighing more than 1,300,000 pounds (590 tonnes), the monument’s 360 ft (110m) height has made it the tallest in the Western Hemisphere during the last decade of the 20th century, dwarfing the Statue of Liberty and the monument a la paz as well.
This place is now under construction but in future you will get to see:
It is 71.7 kilometers from the city center
It takes around 57 minutes to reach by Taxi or drive , which will cost you approx $ 9000 to $ 11000
