Crafted magnificently by the Ancient Altiplano’s, the Chullpas of Sillustani is the historic site of burial tombs for high priests, noblemen, kings, and their royal families. It is located 35 kilometres from the Port City of Puno. Indeed, the design of the tombs depicts that the architecture was much advanced than the Inca civilization. Their edifice resembles a much-like Tiwanaku tribe, which exercised control over the southern shore of Lake Umayo from 500 to 1100 A.D. These towers are developed with skilful geometric uniformity. The tallest of them is 40 feet high, which has been considered as the women’s uterus. In these tombs, the deceased nobles were placed in a fetal position. You can see detailed carvings with lizards and pumas being the prominent features.
All the tombs are left open towards the eastern side. Your experience at the Tombs of Sillustani is enhanced with the picturesque location of Lake Umayo. The Lake Umayo at Sillustani is more of a lagoon with beautiful surroundings. Of course, the backdrop is ideal for clicking exotic pictures. This lake was once a part of Lake Titicaca too. The site has been affected a lot by bombings by the grave robbers because they thought that such tombs might have treasure hidden in them. These unique cylindrical tombs of Sillustani will give you an insight into pre-Columbian culture’s faith in life after death. It is a beautiful site where you can click memorable pictures with the exotic background highlighted. The tombs belong to the Colla people, who were captured by the Inca civilization in the 15th century.
