Nazca Lines are the massive monumental geoglyphs etched in the Peruvian desert. The name to the city Nazca was derived from the Nazca culture that emerged between 100 BC and 800 AD. It is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Approximately 450 kilometers south of Peru’s capital of Lima, a desolate road leads into this vast terrain of scant, dessert-like highlands with lines spreading over the 450-kilometer square. This mind-blowing site was brought to light by an American, Paul Kosok, in 1939. According to archaeological research date back to the sixth or seventh century B.C, the Nazca culture created these strange hundred meter lined, and ever since their discovery, they have created much controversy concerning their origin, function, and significance.
The creation and purpose of Nazca are still a matter of debate among the scientific community. There are about 800 straight lines, 70 biomorphs, and 300 geometric structures found in this region so far. Some of the most famous figures include the tree, the hummingbird, the spider, and the monkey. The recently found structure is like an astronaut, which created more astonishment that any other did. Even after innumerable researches, none could untie the know of how the people of Nazca have created these Brobdingnagian designs. In the coastal area of southern Peru, a region that is bordering on the Nazca Province called the Pampas de Palpa has also been discovered with new stamped geoglyphs, which are named as Palpa line. The researches on this enigma are still in progress, which paves the way for finding more patterns that went unnoticed priorly.
