About Las Nazarenas

Las Nazarenas is a church in Lima. It is the site of the Peruvian Catholic procession of Senor de los Milagros who is a patron of the city. After a major earthquake in 1746, it was reconstructed in 1771 together with the Monastery of Nazarenas. This area was occupied by freed black slaves. It was situated in the middle of a shanty town. A mural of the Crucifixion of Christ on a wall was painted by an ex-slave. In 1655, an earthquake destroyed almost all of this area but the wall was left standing intact. A miracle in the eyes of the locals Iglesia de Las Nazarenas was built around the wall with the image, which was known as El Señor de los Milagros. There is an oil replica, mounted on the wall, standing behind the altar which can be photographed.

Located in the capital city of Lima, Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas is one of the most important Roman Catholic churches in Peru. Constructed in the 17th century, this church is quite famous in the entire world for the famous Lord of Miracles painting. An Angolan slave created the world-renowned painting in the 17th century. After the devastating earthquake in 1746, the church was created along with the monastery in 1771. The painting was intact amid all the destruction. That is why it is displayed on the main altar of the church. As Senor de Los Milagros was one of Lima's most important patrons, the church was dedicated to him. The church is extremely beautiful from the outside, but the altars of the Virgin Mary and Jesus are breathtakingly beautiful as well.

Devotees from all around the world visit the church to seek blessings. The church is quite popular among tourists worldwide because of the famous Lord of Miracles painting. As the church is located in the Tacna area of Lima, travelers explore the entire locality and the church. Most people try to visit the church in October as the procession of the Lord of Miracles takes place at that time. Throughout the city of Lima, people carry out a copy of the famous portrait and spread the blessings of the Lord throughout the city.
