The Spanish name for Saint Francis Monastery is Basilica Convento de San Francisco. This ancient and melancholic church and convent are part of the historic center of Lima. Both were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. San Francisco church and its monastery are most famous for their catacombs containing the bones of about 10,000 people making it Lima's first cemetery. The library, on the upper level, hosts thousands of antique books and the monastery hosts an impressive collection of religious art. It is very well known for a mural of the Last Supper showing the apostles dining on guinea pig with a devil standing next to Judas. Though it has a slightly eerie appeal, the catacombs are actually a very impressive site worth taking a day out to explore.
