A Funicular railway, “Fløibanen” is the heart of Bergen city and connects the city center with the mountain of Fløyen. First operated in 1912, Fløibanen is one of the most significant and frequently visited tourist attractions of Norway. The Funicular has two electrically powered carriages fastened to cable and driven by large pulleys; each of them is equipped to carry approximately 80 to 100 passengers at a time. The link between the Funicular station and the mountain takes around 1 million passengers a year, which includes both visitors and residents of the mountainside. The Funicular is owned by a company called “Fløibanen SA.”
The ride starts from the bottom and takes you towards the top in around 6 to 8 minutes. Reaching above brings you the panoramic view of Fløyen, covering the city and mountains. The picture is so serene that one can doubt their eyes before believing. Apart from the scenic beauty, Fløyen has some excellent bakeries, cafes, and restaurants to must try.
The carriages and cars are named and painted as Rødhette in red and Blåmann in blue, respectively. The lines start running from early morning to the late evening, where the starting departures are half-hourly. This increases to quarter-hourly and so on during the rush hours. Tickets for Fløibanen are available at the ticket office in the lower terminal, self-service ticket machines, and various online ticket booking sites. With the increased traffic during the last few years, an annual record of more than 2023786 journeys was set in 2018.
