Also called “Lord of the Forest” this giant kauri tree is located in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Island. Estimated to be more than 200 years old, this is the world’s largest and oldest living tree.
The Tane Mahuta is regarded as the separator of heaven and earth. This belief dates back to the Maori mythology. It is believed that Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (Earth Mother) could not bear to be apart from each other and were thus locked in a never-ending embrace. This deprived their 6 children of light. The children, yearning to enter the world of light, worked on breaking their embrace. It is said that the mighty Tane Mahuta finally succeeded in separating the parents’ bond. This might tree now stands strong and victorious with shoulders pushed hard against ‘Mother Earth’ and feet stretched high towards ‘Sky Father’.
There are guided walks and tours offered interpreting the Maori legends under the cover of darkness.
