Heri Es Souani is situated in the city of Meknes which is considered to be one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. During the reign of Moulay Ismail, he turned Meknes into an impressive city with high walls and great looks. Heri Es Souani is a place that displays the perfect example of creativity and the finest architecture ever. It was built by Moulay Ismail in the early 18th century. The impressive place has several thick-walled, massive barrel granaries that were used to keep and preserve the grains that were given as tax. The underground flow of water kept it cool through various water channels - a true example of a striking technological entity in those times. The building also provided food and shelter to almost 12,000 horses. The stable was designed in a way that all 12000 horses could be looked upon at one glance. It is indeed one of the finest projects of Moroccan architecture. For those who have a keen interest in history and love to adore the beauty of historical architecture, this is the perfect place to be
The doors made up of original cedar woods that are leaning against the wall and the giant vaults, especially in the dark corners, are absolutely a delight to watch. One cannot think of visiting Meknes without visiting this piece of beautiful architecture. When the setting sun sheds it’s light on the arches of the building; those moments take you to a different world altogether. An earthquake in the 18th century destroyed the building, but its ruins still have a lot to say.
