The most-visited archaeological site in Yucatan is the Chichén Itzá meaning ‘the mouth at the well of Itza’. It has a rich history with interesting facts and it is the centre of pilgrimage for the ancient Maya civilization. It was classified as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are visiting during the spring (20th March) and Autumn Equinox (22nd September), you can see the sun rays create a shadow across the Kukulkan Pyramid. You will have a great view that appears as that of a serpent slithering down the staircase. Do not miss out on the unusual sounds. On clapping once from one end of the Ball Court, you can hear nine echoes in the middle of the court. If you clap in front of the Kukulkan Pyramid, it creates an echo resembling the serpent’s chirp.
There is one direct bus per day that leaves from the Cancun Bus Station in the downtown, leaving at 8:45 a.m. This route takes 3 hours and 5 minutes.
