About Temple of the Inscriptions

Built as a funerary monument for the ruler of Palenque in the 7th century, the Temple of Inscriptions, is essentially a stepped pyramid. Dating back to 226 BC to around 799 AD the Temple was excavated from the jungle that had, over time, absorbed it. But even after the excavation started, the archeologists were not able to uncover the entire ruins. This means there are still a lot of mysteries around the site, ready to be explored. The building and the architecture of the Temple itself give the visitors a lot to look at and appreciate. There are five entrances in front of the building surrounded by carved piers; the hieroglyphic texts are in Maya script. Each of the piers is significant and represents different things. Within the temple, one of the most interesting displays is the lid of Pakal’s sarcophagus. It depicts Pakal lying on top of the ‘earth monster’ with open jaws of a jaguar below him. The ‘Celestial Bird’, on the ‘Cosmic Tree’ with a Serpent in its branches, completes the picture, depicting Pakal between the two worlds - the heavens and the underworld. Pakal’s death mask is another amazing find that can be viewed within the Temple.

The trip to the Temple of Inscriptions will take on a journey like no other. You’ll be able to feel the power of a long-gone empire exude from the ruins and enchant you. It is sure to leave an indelible mark on your memory. From its stunning architecture to the artwork and treasures within, the Temple provides the visitors with a fulfilling experience. It is a great place to explore history and delve deeper into some of the mysteries of the past. Highly recommended!
