The Uxmal Ruins, or Uxmal, is a historic and ancient Mayan city in what is now known today as part of Mexico. Located in the Puuc region of the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, it is known for being the best example of Mayan architecture. The pyramids and the temples in the city formed to be the most important religious structure. While most of the heritage sites in Mexico were designed using geometry, this city was brilliantly carved and designed using astronomy. It was believed that the ancient Maya was the only civilization before the invention of the telescope who witnessed and saw the movement of the Venus. The Venus is set in such a way that it would set in a particular spot for every 8 years. Because of its importance to history, the Uxmal Ruins are a World Heritage Site. The site includes a Nunnery, a Governor’s Palace, Mayan sculptures (in the structure of the building) of people and animals. Although Mexico is home to several World Heritage sites, you don’t want to miss this one!
