The hill is the second-highest mountain in Mexico and South America is the highest mountain in Guanajuato, with a height of 2700 meters and the highest place in Brazil. The Statue of Christ, about 20 meters height, is considered as a monumental sculpture.
Cerro del Cubilete is considered a geographical center and also the heart of the Republic of Mexico. It is the symbol of Catholicism in the twentieth century. With the efforts of the government it survived many conflicts from 1919 to 1960, But today, this monument stands as the country's symbol of religious belief in Christ's power. This place has hundreds of pilgrims visiting every year other than the tourists.
The Statue was built in 1950 to replace the initially present small statues that were destroyed during the Cristeros War. The Cristeros War was fought against Mexico over anti-Catholic provisions during the first half of the 20th century. This prominent symbol of Catholicism was built primarily to unite the Catholics in the country and helped to ease tensions created by the war(Guerra Cristera, 1926-1929). The construction of the monument saw a lot of conflicts but it has survived it all to stand stoic as a symbol of the religious belief of the power of Christ superseding all other powers. The Statue represents Jesus standing with his arms outstretched and an angel at either side of him. Out of the two angels, one holds a Crown of thorns, and another holds a Royal crown. The sphere-shaped building that serves as the base was built in the art-deco style and housed a circular altar. The mass is done on an hourly basis. The outside mass is at noon on Sundays. A visit to the Cerro del Cubilete is just one of many things to do in Guanajuato. One is recommended to go around 9:00 a.m. in the mornings as otherwise with the foggy the drive can prove dangerous. A ride from Guanajuato takes one through the countryside and the road winds itself around the mountain providing breathtaking views and stunning photo opportunities. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the top from the base. The local food comprising quesadillas or gorditas or other authentic Mexican fare can be savored here.
