Over his lifetime Beket-Ata built four mosques, three of them underground. Beket-Ata was a Sufi religious teacher, scientist, philosopher, and revered holy man. The weak and sick went to him for healing and those in conflicts came to him to solve disputes.
After his death at the age of 63 in 1813, he was buried in the mosque known only by his name. This seven-room mosque is carved into the rock of the Oglandy Mountains. The journey to the mosque is a pilgrimage through a picturesque canyon and scenic desert. It is a place of prayer, community, and includes quite often the sacrifice of a lamb. Worshippers will gather, share food with one another, and quite often stay in one of the guest rooms.
Beket-Ata’s message of spiritual harmony is especially important today in a world with diverse cultures and religions. Respectful clothing must be worn in this holy place.
