The Karagandy Zoo, in Karagandain, is one of the three largest and oldest zoos in Kazakhstan, along with Almaty and Shymkent. The zoo was built in 1938 and over 107.4 acres of land.
Although Karagandy Zoo has almost 250 species of animals, it is best known for its “stars.” It is home to Eugene and Kainarkoz, a pair of hippos, and a magpie named Klara. The most famous is Batyr. This talking elephant is said to have been able to say over 20 phrases including, “Batyr is good.” He was featured on the radio in 1980, 13 years before his death.
The zoo’s aim is to provide a safe haven for animals and a place for people to visit and feed them. The city budget includes funds to maintain and care for the buildings.
