There are 2 ways to get to Lake Toba
1. fly directly to Lake Toba (Silangit Airport)
2. fly to Medan and take a 4-hour car ride to Parapat.
From Medan, Amplas bus terminal to Parapat, take bus 64, and buy the ticket in the bus and do not buy from people who approach you outside in the bus terminal. A bus ticket from Medan to Parapat will cost between Rp. 20,000 to Rp. 40,000. The ride takes 4 to 6 hours.
Or from Medan, take a shared minivan taxi that seats 7 people. The price of a seat is Rp. 80,000.
Another option to travel from Medan to Pematang is by train, where one can travel comfortably and enjoy the views. You can take a train from Medan to Pematang Siantar which leaves once a day and costs Rp. 40,000 for a one-way ticket. The train takes around 4 hours to reach Pematang Siantar. From Pematang take a becak, that is a local transport to Parapat where you can take the ferry.
Another way to travel conveniently is to arrange for a Private Car from Medan to Parapat for around Rp. 400,000. The travel time from Medan to Parapat is about 4 hours.
After reaching Parapat take a ferry from Parapat to Samosir. Ferry is available every half as hour one. It costs Rp. 7,000 per person. The last ferry leaves at 7:30 pm during peak season and 6 pm in low season. Get your ticket on the boat to pay the correct ticket cost.
