How to reach

Getting to Lombok from Bali

By Air:

This is the easiest and most convenient way. Fly out from Bali's Ngurah Rai International airport(DPS)t to Lombok International Airport(LOP) in Praya, which takes 25 to 45 minutes. Airlines flying directly from Bali to Lombok are:

  • Garuda Indonesia(GA) Indonesia's national and international carrier Ticket prices are around IDR 456,825.
  • Lion Air(JT) Ticket prices are about IDR 371,170.
  • Wings Air(IW) A domestic commuter passenger carrier. Tickets are about IDR 356,900.

Mataram, Lombok's capital is 37 km or an hour's taxi ride northwest of the airport while the popular main beach resort of Senggigi is a 90-minute, 56 km away. To get out of the airport use any of these options:

  • Hotel transfer services- Check beforehand. as most hotels offer shuttle transfer services.
  • DAMRI Bus, the cheapest way at IDR 25,000 and to the Senggigi resort area from IDR 35,000.
  • Airport Taxi(Koperasi) services offer non-metered and fixed fares based on zones which range from IDR 250,000 to IDR 300,000 for a ride to Mataram or Senggigi. Pay at the airport counter and not to the driver.
  • Metered Taxis such as Bluebird and Express Taxi, though these do not operate within the airport grounds, can be flagged down outside the airport with fares from IDR 125,000 to 155,000. But you need to walk about a kilometer out of the airport to find one, so keep it as an outside option.

By Sea:

One can get to Lombok from Bali's main seaports, but the best departure point is Padangbai Harbor in  East Bali. Get to Padangbai from the main southern beach resort areas like Kuta and Seminyak which is about  90-minute drive. Can take ferries at Lembar Harbor on Lombok's southwest coast or take the fast boats either at Bangsal in the north or Senggigi beach on the west.

Public Ferries from Padangbai almost hourly and can take up to 5 hours. Would cost about IDR 57,100. The fast boat services would cost about IDR 40,000  to 714,000 and also has insurance cover. These include:

  • BlueWater Express
  • Eka Jaya Fastboat
  • Marina Srikandi
  • Scoot Fast Cruises
  • Semaya One Cruise
  • Wahana Gili Ocean 2

Tips

  • Get a local guide who is able to converse fairly well with you
  • It is a good idea to travel here during the dry season.
  • As its not too big most destinations can be reached by driving. choose main roads but its better to be safe than sorry. Generally with no signboards, one needs to stop and ask for directions. But its a good option is to ask women or elder people.
  • Makes sense to learn a couple of Bahasa Indonesian expressions. Ask more people to confirm that you are on the right track.
  • Ignore the stares and lewd talk.
  • Ask locals, or tour administrators beforehand which roads are safer, even if they will take you on a longer route. Be careful and never stop for anything at  Awang, Tanjung Aan, all the way towards Selong Belanak and Pink Beach and Are Guling.
  • Best to ensure you don't travel alone, especially on bikes, do not carry valuables. Carry very little money and hide your phones from view. Some people also carry a bag of pebbles with them to hurl if attacked.
  • If wanting to go on a trek in mt. Rinjani, do take a  guide to lead you. Do not trek during the rains. It can prove fatal. Do not enter into 'Official' entry points at the National Park.
  • Be careful with touts acting like workers, who may fleece you by asking for an enormous amount before entering temples and for parking. It's illegal but accepted. Similar experiences can be had on the beaches.
  • Beware buying local alcohol from new overly-friendly friends. They can suggest a cocktail that has been laced with something harmful. Just be on guard at all times and stick with known folk.
  •  Carry water along with you at all times.
  • Wear clothes that are best suited for the local weather conditions.
  •  Just be cautious and follow advice and warnings, and stay clear of suspicious, and overly friendly characters and shady places.
