About Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple, or Barabudur, is the most-visitedattraction in Indonesia and for good reason. Built near Muntilan, this Buddhisttemple dates back to the 9th century Sailendra Dynasty.Although the temple design is clearly Buddhist, it also incorporates Indonesianindigenous elements.

Every pilgrimage is a journey, as is a visitthrough this temple. Worshippers begin at the bottom of the nine platforms. Theplatforms are topped with a central dome surrounded by 72 seated Buddhastatues. From top to bottom are over 2,600 relief panels and over 400 moreBuddha statues. The journey to the top takes visitors through the threesymbolic levels of Buddhism: the world of desire (Kāmadhātu), the world offorms (Rūpadhātu), and the world of formlessness (Arūpadhātu). Windingstaircases and walkways guide visitors past walls with 1,460 relief panelsdedicated to Lord Buddha and indigenous life.

Considered one of the greatest archaeological sitesin Southeast Asia, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1975. It’stime to go on your own journey to Nirvana with a visit to the largest Buddhisttemple in the world.
