Zugspitze is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains, and the highest mountain in Germany. The mountain’s peak straddles the Austrian border. The summit rises 9,718 feet above sea level and has three glaciers. The altitude and climate create great conditions for downhill skiing and snowboarding, and enables Germany’s hightest ski resort, located on the Zugspitze, to remain open for six months of the year with natural snow. Take the cogwheel train from Garmisch to Eibsee station, where you can catch a cablecar from Lake Eibsee to the top of the mountain. The 10-minute cable car ride offers breathtaking views of the lake and the Zugspitze peak. The cable car holds the record for the longest free span at over 10,000 feet. From the top of the Zugspitze, you can see four different countries. Plan to head up the mountain in the morning with a picnic basket, or have lunch in one of the mountain-top restaurants. |
