Kolner Dom — or the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter — is located in Cologne. It is the city’s most-visited tourist attraction and dominates the city skiline. On average, 20,000 people visit the cathedral daily. The gothic and neogothic cathedral sports two twin spires, which, until Gustavo Eiffel designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, was Europe’s tallest building. Today it remains the tallest twin-spired church at 515 feet tall. The south tower is open to tourists who wish to climb the 533 steps to the base of the steeple. A structure of this size was not constructed in a season. Indeed, by the time it was finally completed in 1880, it had been under construction for more than half a century. The cathedral was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. It remains the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne, and houses the shrine — and the relics — of the Three Magi, or the three wise men.
Standing tall in the middle of the sprawling city is a massive love letter to Gothic architecture. The Cologne Cathedral is every bit impressive as it is simply awe-inspiring. It is the tallest twin-towered church in the entire world and the best part is that visitors can go up the towers and view the city’s skyline as never before. The Cologne Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne himself, and is also the most visited landmark in all of Germany. The Cathedral’s rich history takes root all the way back in the 1200s, which helps conceptualize why it is the home of so many relics.
The Cologne Cathedral needs to be visited by everyone. From the imposing spires to the impressive halls and architecture, it is truly a marvel to which words and pictures cannot do justice. The cathedral is free to visit and offers guided tours to enrich yourself with its very long history and collection of important relics. The cathedral is an amazing choice for a visit, especially when one gets to the top of the towers.
