Perched atop Mount Hohenzollern sits the impressive Hohenzollern Castle, ancestral home of the Hohenzollern family. The family was a thousand year dynasty of kings and emperors, who left an indelible mark on Germany. But the castle that sits on the mountain today was not the mountain’s — or the dynasty’s — first castle. The first was constructed in the early 11th century and destroyed in battle in 1423. A second larger, sturdier castle was completed in 1461, but fell into disrepair and was demolished. The current Hohenzollern Castle was completed in 1867 by King Frederick William IV of Prussia. In 1945, Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, and son of the last Hohenzollern monarch, lived in the castle. Family descendants of the Hohenzollern family still own the castle. The Hohenzollern monarch was overthrown after World War I when the Weimar Repulbic was established. Visit Hohenzollern Castle for a tour of living history, and for a glimpse into an important German dynasty. |
