This building was constructed between 1715 and 1745. This was actually a Jesuit home until 1767, till the inhabitants were expelled out of the country. After that, the building was used as at various points in history as a tobacco warehouse, government building and even a theatre. In the 1970s, this old Jesuit Convent was finally converted into the Panteón Nacional. Neo-Renaissance style of architecture was used for the construction of the building. The Bell Tower and the Dominican Coat of Arms are beautifully sculptured over the building. The interior of the Pantheon showcases a Baroque style of design. You can see a magnificent copper chandelier hanging from the roof, that adds to the beauty of the hall. This chandelier was presented by Francisco Franco, a Spanish head of state. The interior becomes even more enchanting with the bright light coming from the large window, on the rear side of the building. On the ceilings, you can see a stunning mural painting called "The Last Judgement” by Spanish painter Rafael Pellicer. This Nacional is the resting place for the remains of many of the national heroes of the Dominican Republic, as well as notable magnates who helped gain independence from Spain, and some presidents and historians as well.
