Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is one of the most popular museums in Havana. It houses the largest and most interesting collection of art in the country. Also known as the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana, the museum was established on February 23, 1913, by Emilio Heredia. The museum is divided into two sections, one is dedicated to Cuban art and the other features artworks from other parts of the world. The Cuban Art building is known as Palacio de Bellas Artes and the other one is called the Palacio del Centro Asturiano.
Both the portions feature some of the best artworks that have been preserved for decades. When you enter the Cuban section, you will be amazed to see the huge variety of paintings and other art forms that depict almost everything. Themes like the Cuban revolution and Spanish occupation can be seen widely. Paintings of famous artists like Guillermo Collazo and Raul Martinez are on display in this section. Paintings from the 16th century until the 19th century offer a magnificent treat to art lovers. Other artists on display here include Leopoldo Romañach and Federico Beltrán Masses.
The international wing of this museum or the Palacio del Centro Asturiano was constructed by architect Manuel Bustos in 1927. The section contains artworks from several dynasties like the Roman, Japanese, Greek, Spanish, and British as well as several European artifacts. Some of the artifacts can be dated back to 500 B.C. Interestingly, this part once served as a club to the natives of Asturias, but it was transformed to house the Supreme Court of Justice after the 1959 Revolution.
The National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana is 20 kilometers from the Jose Marti International Airport and takes 30 minutes to reach via taxi. You can also opt for bus service if you want to.
The museum is less than 1 kilometer from the Central Railway Station Havana (Estación Central de Ferrocarriles). It takes hardly 4 to 5 minutes to reach this museum on foot.
You can reach the museum by riding on a bus that runs at regular intervals across the city.
