As an exceptional example of a Carolingian work of art, the construction of the Church of St. Donatus started in the 9th century in Zadar, Croatia. Its architectural peculiarity distinguishes it from the rest of monuments found in this history-drenched Nation. Saint Donatus led the construction of the Church which bears architectural simplicity in its round shapes, a symbol of continuity and divine connection. Built on a roman building relic, materials from the previous structure can still be found within the Church and can be identified which gives the ensemble a sense of historical evolution.
