Roman Emperor Diocletian’s desire was to spend his retirement years right here, in the serene and picturesque town of Split. His Palace also served as a military fortress; the precision and astonishing beauty with which it was erected, however, brought the Emperor to use it mostly for his personal wishes and desires. Built right on the coastal area of Split, the Emperor did not spare any sort of opulence: white stone, marble, sphinxes, and columns were the at the center of everything. This massive structure that takes up about half of the Old Town perimeter, will make it hard for you to realize that it was only machine-precision human labor that made this retirement home dream come to life.
It is 229 km away from the city center.
