As you wander through the old city, you will stumble across or walk towards various historical treasures and the rich culture of the country of Belgium. One such instance is the Grote Markt, a mesmerizing old market square located in the center of Antwerp. There are 16th Century historic guildhalls that surround the market square edges accentuating the impressive city hall building. This square is filled to the brim with history, folklore and rich architecture that you don’t want to miss. Right in the heart of the square stands the iconic statue of the city, the Brabo Fountain. This Baroque architectural style sculpture is of the mythical Roman soldier Silvius Brabo, as he tosses the severed hand of a slain giant. There are various legends that state this is how the city of Antwerp received its name – “handwerpen,” or “hand throw.” This is quite an interesting legend that warrants an in-person visit, don’t you agree? You can even take a break from your stroll through the market by stopping at one of the many restaurants and cafes. Tingle your taste buds in their delectable spreads. Also, within walking distance lies the Scheldt River, that during winters hosts a Christmas market and an ice rink. You will be spoilt for choice in this beautiful and mesmerizing town.
