Belarus has always been on the choice list of travellers who wish to explore hidden gems of Europe. The Eastern European country is much known for its historical castles and monuments most of which were erected during the period of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Located near the capital city of Minsk, Lida Castle in the city of Lida is a fascinating castle to explore.
The 14th-century citadel was patronized by Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania to defend his kingdom from the Teutonic Knights. With Kamenka River in the east and River Lida in the west, the rigid boulder walls of the castle acted as a strong repel to the intruders for seven centuries. However, Lida was conquered and lost several times until 1982 when actions were taken by the state towards its restoration. If you are a history buff, this is a place you must visit.
Present-day, it is one of the major attractions in Belarus that gathers thousands of visitors every year. The castle boasts of its medieval architecture that is reflected through its facades, trapezoid loopholes, and passages. The high stone walls of the defensive castle indicate that the fort was built keeping in mind the enemy’s military attacks.
The castle is actually very similar to the castles of Northern Europe whose construction lines were drawn considering both an enemy attack and the prince’s likings. There are a number of mysterious tales associated with the castle that narrates how the soldier ghosts can be seen at the corridors of the fort. There is also the tale of the pine tree that bled after one of its branches were chopped off. True or not, these fort mysteries to date remain one of the top reasons to visit Lida Castle.
The place offers various tourist attractions throughout the year like summer knight festival, skating games, and theatre performances. Although Lida Castle is a smaller erection compared to other similar attractions in the city, it is undoubtedly a must-visit for the history and architect loving nomad.
