About Casapueblo

The “living sculpture”, Casapueblo, is the most popular man-made wonders of South America, located in Punta del Este, a city in Uruguay, on the Atlantic Coast. The building was built by the artist Páez Vilaró in 1958 and he started to build it as his residence and studio. With the passage of 30 years, he gradually transformed it into a strange-looking whitewashed building with the help of the local fishermen. It is believed that he was influenced by the style of mud-nests of the hornero birds that look like ovens. The artist gradually built extra rooms for his friends, family members, and guests. Later, with the help of his business contacts, he opened the building as a beautiful hotel along with an art gallery, museum, and studio, which altogether becomes a must-see destination in Uruguay.

The hotel is located around 13 kilometres away from Punta del Este. The building now has a hotel, a museum, an art gallery, and a cafeteria. In the main dome, it houses the museum as well as the workshop of the late artist, where visitors can explore the work of the late artist. There are four exhibition halls and they are named as José Gómez Sicre Room, Rafael Squirm Room, Pablo Picasso Room, and Nicolás Guillén Room. The most important aspect of the place is the “Ceremony of the Sun”. It is performed on the terrace of the museum every day, since 1994. The sun was one of the artistic motifs of Páez Vilaró. Every day before sunset, the artist’s recorded poem is dedicated to bid the farewell to the sun.
