It isn’t every day that you get the chance to take a leisurely stroll in a 13th Century stone castle, without having to look over your shoulder, repeatedly. So, grab this opportunity to visit the Uzhhorod Castle on your next visit to Ukraine. Take a tour of the blood-chilling castle cellars for the “Torture Chamber” exposition. Followed by a tasting of the renowned Zakarpattia wines, to calm your nerves. Or even the other way around, whatever suits you best.
The Uzhhorod Castle is a famous tourist attraction mainly for its historical, architectural and true medieval spirit. Despite its age, it is one of the most preserved medieval castles in Ukraine. In the 18th Century, the castle lost its defensive importance and was given to a spiritual seminary to govern. Since 1947, the castle is used as a housing place for the collection of the Zakarpattia Local History Museum, of over 100,000 unique exhibits. Strategically located against a picturesque backdrop, the castle has numerous dark legends associated with it.
Extremely tourist-friendly, the museum offers detailed information about the history of the castle and the city. What makes this even more interesting is that the exposition is located in the knightly room, which was used for ceremonial receptions in its former glorious years.
