About Lubart’s Castle

Almost every location worth its grain has its share of mysterious legends. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like to spice up their life with tales of heroic victories, of sacrifices made in the name of love, or of bone-chilling vengeance! Then, you may want to get on the next plane to Ukraine and visit Lubart’s Castle. In 2011, it even won the first place in the “Seven Wonders of Ukraine” contest. There is no doubt as to why this is such a loved and popular attraction in Ukraine.

How many castles can boast to be one of the most exquisite and oldest examples of medieval fortification architecture in entire Europe? One such fortress is the Lutsk Castle or Lubart’s Castle that was built in 1340. A typical European medieval fortification, the castle was the residence of the Lithuanian Prince Lubart. Over the years to follow, there were many rulers who went green with envy over the fortifications of this castle. What is so special about Lubart’s Castle is that it remained in excellent condition, even after 600 years of countless attacks, and the natural wear and tear of time.

Akin to all ancient structures, there are numerous legends linked with this fortress too. One such legend is that of the Prince’s affection for a beautiful girl called Oksana. Unfortunately, this love wasn’t reciprocated, which drove the Prince crazy with fury. In a fit of rage, the Prince ordered the girl to be imprisoned until she agrees to marry him. But Oksana wouldn’t budge from her decision, so the Prince ordered his soldiers to have their way with her. As a result, the poor girl was killed and her spirit haunts the corridors, till date. Supposedly, she avenged her death by killing all of the soldiers responsible for her plight. Interesting, right?
