The “Kapellbrücke”, or Chapel Bridge, is a covered wooden footbridge in Lucerne. It is also the oldest wooden bridge of its kind in Europe, first written about in 1367. It is also the world’s oldest existing truss bridge. A bridge is a bridge, right? Not so. The Chapel Bridge is one of three wooden footbridges in Lucerne to have original triangular paintings in the roof’s framing. Outside of Lucerne, no other wooden footbridge in Europe can boast this. The Chapel Bridge, with its Water Tower, is part of the oldest medieval ramparts of the city. Sadly, in 1993 all but 25 of the original paintings were destroyed by fire. The paintings were created in the 17th century by Hans Heinrich Wägmann, to show the events in Lucerne’s history. Find your souvenirs at the tourist gift shop located in The Water Tower to commemorate your visit.
Chapel Bridge is located in the center of Lucerne on the Reuss river.
The train line Northern stops near the bridge.
The bus lines 2A, 347 also stop near the bridge.
