About Zoo Basel

The Zoologischer Garten Basel, or Zoo Basel is Switzerland's oldest and largest zoo. It is also the most-visited tourist attraction in Switzerland. Zoo Basel boasts both the first Indian rhinoceros birth and greater fling hatch in a zoo. It was where the breeding program of Somali wild ass started, and just about every wild donkey in zoos around the globe are related to those in Basel. It has had great breeding success with cheetahs and pygmy hippopotamuses as well. If you are planning a trip to Basel, be sure to book your family in a private afternoon or evening tour at the zoo. Finish your day with a bite at the restaurant with a view of the Tembea enclosure. It’s a meal with a view of the elephants at play. Can you imagine anything better?

How to reach

The Light Rail lines 10 and 17 stop near Zoo Basel.
The Bus lines 30 also stops near Zoo Basel.
Bus lines 34 stops at Rütimeyerplatz bus station.
All buses, trams/metro are free in Basel for tourists. 
 

Tips

  • Visitors pay half of the price if they use the mobility card.
  • The restaurant is decently priced and you can get a variety of tasty options.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • It is strictly forbidden to feed the animals or put hands on any objectable items.
  • The zoo is not responsible for loss or theft. Use of the storage is also at your own risk.
  • There is a gift shop.
  • Lots of cafes, food outlets, and washrooms are within the premises.
  • Visit early during the day time to escape the rush hours.
  • Book tickets online to avoid long queues.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • If you are travelling in the summer season, make sure that you cover yourself well, carry an umbrella, hat, water, and sunglasses.
  • It is large, so several hours are required to do the full tour.
  • Don't forget to carry your camera to capture the amazing view.
  • Carry an ample amount of water to avoid dehydration.
  • Zoo Basel tickets include 1 CHF for nature-conservation contribution.
